Morton J. 'Mort' Steinau, 87Longtime activist; active in UU Nauset Fellowship    EASTHAM - Morton Jerome "Mort" Steinau, 87, formerly of New Haven, Conn., died Sunday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, two weeks after having a heart attack and minor stroke.
     He was the husband of Barbara Hill Steinau for 65 years.
     Mr. Steinau met his wife at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, a small college experimenting in communal living, where he stayed on as college business manager. The couple later again lived communally for eight years at East River Farm in Connecticut.
     He retired in 1979 after long careers as a life insurance salesman and East Coast traffic manager of Time/Life. He also worked as a cabinetmaker.
     In 1990 he and his wife moved to Cape Cod and joined Cape Codders for Peaceful Solutions, which evolved into the Eastham Vigilers, still visible on the village green. He was a founder of Cape Codders for Peace and Justice and was active in Fellowship of Reconciliation, Cape Codders Against Racism and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. A longtime pacifist, he was active with his family in demonstrations since the 1960s.
     He also wrote vigorously about U.S. military invasions, most recently Iraq. A member of the UU Nauset Fellowship of Eastham, he served as treasurer, secretary and president. He was also a volunteer for the Eastham Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program. A nature lover, he and his wife spent dozens of summers camping extensively in North America and Europe.
     Besides his wife, survivors include three children, Peter Steinau, Mardi Steinau and Joan Steinau Lester; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
     A memorial celebration is from 4 to 6:45 p.m. tomorrow beginning with a potluck, at Chapel in the Pines, Eastham, behind the village green.
